“We’re dead,” Sammy said again later that afternoon. The friends were at the Petersons’ house. They had gone there after school to work on their report. They all had wanted to see Lola again, for one thing. For another, the Petersons’ big dining room table was the best place to spread out and work.

Sammy threw down his pencil. “I’ve already erased that word five times,” he said. “There’s just a big hole in the paper. How do you spell ‘expedition,’ anyway?”

Charles sighed. “I can spell it, but I sure can’t illustrate it.” He pointed to his paper, where he’d been trying to draw a picture of Lewis and Clark paddling their loaded keelboat up the Missouri River. It looked like something the Bean might have drawn.

“It doesn’t even matter,” said David. “We’re all going to flunk anyway, because I’m not going to be able to open my mouth on Friday. A ten-minute report in front of the whole class? I can’t believe he’s making me do it.” Once again, he put his head down on the table and groaned. “Save me, Lola,” he said. Then he giggled. “No, Lola! I didn’t say ‘lick my ears.’ I said ‘save me.’ ” Lola wagged her tail and licked some more.
